painted and patterned bookshelves

We have built-ins in our living room and I would love to paint them white, but I'm thinking we'll just leave them as is for now. Instead, I'd like to spruce up the back of the shelves with some color. I'm not sure if I want to paint the backs or use a pattern or wallpaper.

Here are some photos that are inspiring me right now. First up are some painted bookcases and then some with patterns/wallpaper.

Are you a fan of painted or patterned bookcases? Have you done anything similar in your home?

  1. I've been seeing this style a lot lately! It's really pretty, but I'm not sure if I would ever paint my book shelves. :)

  5. i love the idea of adding pops of color or patterns to the inside of shelves. if you get bored with them...it's an easy fix instead of having to redo the entire piece! can't wait to see what you decide to do;) enjoy your day!

  8. Love the idea of painted, patterned, or wallpapered shelves! I am not sure which I like better, but I think, out of the photos, at least, that I was drawn more to the solid pops of color. Rebecca (my blog partner) is helping me redo my living room (think I've mentioned that before somewhere in another comment!), and she was thinking of doing a wallpaper in a recessed area behind a hutch. Not quite the same as the back of a bookshelf, but the same general idea. Can't wait to see what you choose to go with!

  10. Such a fun idea I'd probably go paint just because if you end up wanting to go back wallpaper can be such a paint to remove.

  16. I always see the cutest photos of shelves like this on Pinterest. Totally agree that a little color will do the trick! You could try cutting cardboard to fit the back of the shelves and wrapping in cheap fabric from a local craft store to get the various pattern looks above.
